How to Sell on eBay: The Complete Guide to Getting Top Dollar
Why eBay Is Still the Best Place to Sell Collectibles
Despite the rise of Facebook Marketplace, Mercari, and other platforms, eBay remains the dominant marketplace for collectibles, antiques, and specialty items. With 132 million active buyers worldwide, eBay gives you access to the largest pool of collectors willing to pay premium prices. The platform’s completed listings data also makes it the industry standard for determining fair market value — when appraisers and dealers quote prices, they are often referencing eBay sold data.
eBay fees are currently 13.25% of the total sale (including shipping) for most categories, with a $0.30 per-order fee. While that sounds steep, the premium prices items fetch on eBay compared to local sales typically more than offset the fees.
Before You List: Know What Your Item Is Worth
The biggest mistake sellers make is listing items without researching their value first. Before creating a single listing:
- Search completed listings. On eBay, filter by “Sold Items” to see what your item actually sold for — not what people are asking, which is often inflated.
- Use AI valuation tools. Upload a photo to our free AI value estimator for an instant price range based on current market data.
- Check condition carefully. A Mint condition item might sell for 5x to 10x more than one in Good condition. Be honest about flaws.
- Identify variants. Small differences (first edition vs. reprint, black label vs. Greatest Hits, specific mint marks) can mean huge price differences.
Taking Photos That Sell
Photos are the most important factor in your listing. Bad photos kill sales; great photos command premium prices.
- Use natural light. Photograph near a window during the day. Avoid flash, which creates harsh shadows and washes out colors.
- Use a plain background. A white poster board, clean table, or neutral fabric. Busy backgrounds distract from the item.
- Show all angles. Front, back, sides, top, bottom. For coins, photograph both obverse and reverse. For watches, include the dial, case back, and clasp.
- Photograph flaws. Close-up photos of scratches, dents, stains, or wear. Buyers appreciate transparency and are less likely to request returns.
- Include size reference. Place a ruler, coin, or credit card next to the item so buyers can gauge size.
- Use all 12 photo slots. More photos mean more buyer confidence and fewer questions.
Writing Listings That Convert
The Title
You get 80 characters. Use every one. Include the brand, model, year, condition, and any relevant keywords. Example: “1955 Doubled Die Lincoln Penny MS-63 NGC Certified — Key Date Error Coin” is better than “Old Penny For Sale.”
The Description
Start with the most important details: what the item is, its condition, and any notable features. Then add history, provenance, measurements, and shipping information. Be honest about flaws — this builds trust and protects you from return claims.
Item Specifics
Fill out every item specific field eBay offers. These fields power eBay’s search and filtering system. Items with complete specifics get up to 36% more views than those without.
Pricing Strategies
Auction vs. Buy It Now
- Auction (7 days): Best for rare or unique items where the market price is uncertain. Coins, rare cards, and vintage items often do well at auction. Start the bidding low to attract attention — serious collectors will bid up to fair market value.
- Buy It Now: Best for items with well-established values. Modern electronics, common collectibles, and commodity items sell better at fixed prices. Price competitively based on completed listings data.
- Best Offer: Add this to Buy It Now listings. Many buyers automatically filter for Best Offer. Set an auto-decline threshold at your minimum acceptable price.
When to List
Auctions ending on Sunday evenings (6–9 PM local time) consistently get the highest final prices. Avoid ending auctions on Friday or Saturday nights when people are out. For Buy It Now listings, timing matters less, but listing on Sunday through Wednesday gets the most initial visibility.
Shipping Like a Pro
- Offer free shipping. eBay’s algorithm favors free shipping listings. Build the shipping cost into your item price.
- Use appropriate packaging. Coins need 2x2 flips in bubble mailers. Cards need top loaders and team bags. Electronics need original boxes or equivalent padding.
- Ship within 1 business day. Fast handling time improves your seller metrics and search ranking.
- Always use tracking. Ship with USPS First Class (under 16 oz), Priority Mail (over 16 oz), or UPS. Never ship without tracking — it is your proof of delivery if a buyer claims non-receipt.
- Insure valuable items. For items over $100, add shipping insurance. USPS Priority Mail includes $100 of insurance. For higher values, purchase additional coverage.
Avoiding Scams
- Ship only to the address on file. Never ship to an alternative address requested in messages — this voids your seller protection.
- Require signature confirmation for items over $750. eBay requires this for seller protection on high-value transactions.
- Be wary of new accounts with zero feedback bidding on expensive items. You can set buyer requirements to block accounts with too many unpaid item strikes.
- Document everything. Photograph the item and the packaging before shipping. Record serial numbers for electronics and watches.
- Know the return policy. eBay’s default is 30-day returns. For high-value items, consider offering returns to build buyer confidence — most buyers do not return items they have researched.
Maximizing Your Profits
- Value your items first. Use our free AI valuation tool to get a realistic price range before listing. You might discover items worth more (or less) than you expected.
- Group low-value items into lots. Individual items worth $5 to $10 are not worth listing separately. Group them into lots of 10 to 20 similar items.
- Time seasonal items. List Christmas items in November, sports items during the season, and back-to-school items in August.
- Promoted Listings. For competitive categories, paying 2% to 5% for Promoted Listings can significantly increase visibility and sales velocity.
- Reinvest in inventory. Buy undervalued items at garage sales, estate sales, and thrift stores. The best eBay sellers have a keen eye for items priced below their market value.
