How to Tell If Chanel Is Real: Authenticate Bags, Jewelry & Perfume
Why Chanel Authentication Is Critical
Chanel is one of the most counterfeited luxury brands, with fake Classic Flaps and Boy Bags flooding the resale market. A genuine Chanel Classic Flap Medium retails for over $10,800 in 2026 and resells for $6,000 to $9,000. Superfake versions cost $200 to $500 and are disturbingly accurate. Whether buying pre-owned from The RealReal, Vestiaire Collective, eBay, or a consignment shop, you need to know what to check.
12 Ways to Authenticate a Chanel Bag
1. The Authenticity Card
Every Chanel bag comes with a black authenticity card embossed with a gold CC logo and a serial number that matches the sticker inside the bag. The card has rounded corners and a subtle holographic quality when tilted under light. On fakes, the card is often too thick or thin, the gold embossing is flat, or the serial number does not match the interior sticker. Note: bags made after 2021 use microchips instead of stickers, so newer bags will not have a sticker inside.
2. The Serial Sticker (Pre-2021) / Microchip (Post-2021)
Pre-2021 bags have a white sticker with a serial number inside the bag, usually in an interior pocket. The sticker has two rows of numbers and a cross-hatch pattern. It should have an “X” pattern visible when tilted. The sticker should not peel off easily. Post-2021 bags replaced the sticker with an NFC microchip that can be scanned at Chanel boutiques. The serial number format encodes the production year and batch.
3. The Quilting Pattern
Chanel’s diamond quilting is one of its most recognizable features. On genuine bags, the quilts are perfectly even, puffy, and symmetrical. The quilting pattern should align across panels and seams — if you trace a diamond line, it should continue unbroken across the flap and body. Fakes often have flat, uneven quilts or misaligned patterns at the seams.
4. The CC Turn Lock
The interlocking CC clasp is the signature of Chanel bags. On genuine bags, the right C slightly overlaps the left C at the top, and the left C slightly overlaps the right C at the bottom. This pattern is consistent across all Chanel hardware. The CC should be perfectly symmetrical with flat, even surfaces and clean edges. Fakes often have rounded edges, uneven Cs, or the wrong overlap pattern.
5. The Chain Strap
Chanel chain straps are made of high-quality metal with leather woven through each link. The chain should feel heavy and substantial. The leather should be threaded evenly through the links without bunching or gaps. On Classic Flaps, the chain is 24 inches long for the medium size. Fakes use lighter metal that sounds tinny and have loosely threaded or poorly aligned leather.
6. The Stitching
Chanel uses approximately 9 to 11 stitches per inch of quilting. The stitching is perfectly even, with no loose threads, uneven spacing, or visible knots. The thread color matches the leather precisely. On the Classic Flap, count the stitches on the back pocket — genuine bags have a consistent count. One common tell on fakes is the stitch count being lower (7–8 per inch) and less uniform.
7. The Leather
Chanel uses two primary leathers: lambskin and caviar (grained calfskin). Lambskin is butter-soft with a smooth, luxurious feel and a slight sheen. It scratches easily — which is actually normal for genuine lambskin. Caviar leather has a distinctive pebbled texture that is uniform and consistent. Fakes often use leather that is too stiff, too shiny, or has an artificial-looking grain pattern. The leather should have a rich, natural smell.
8. The Interior Stamp
“CHANEL” and “MADE IN FRANCE” (or “MADE IN ITALY”) are heat-stamped inside the bag. The font is clean and precise. The “CHANEL” letters have specific proportions — the A has no horizontal crossbar, and the E has equal-length horizontal lines. On fakes, the stamp is often too deep, too shallow, uses the wrong font, or includes an accent on the E (“CHANÉL” is wrong).
9. The Zipper
Genuine Chanel bags use high-quality zippers, typically marked “CHANEL” or the Lampo brand on the zipper pull. The zipper should glide smoothly without catching. The teeth should be evenly spaced and lay flat. Fakes use cheap zippers that catch, have uneven teeth, or use generic unmarked pulls.
10. The Dust Bag
Current Chanel dust bags are black with a white “CHANEL” logo and white drawstring. Older dust bags (pre-2015) were white with black text. The fabric is soft, high-quality cotton. The CHANEL text is centered and cleanly printed. Fakes may use the wrong color combination, cheap fabric, or off-center printing.
11. The Box and Packaging
Genuine Chanel boxes are sturdy white or black with a matte finish and the Chanel logo centered on top. Inside is tissue paper, a ribbon, and sometimes a camellia flower. The box should feel premium and solid. Fakes often have flimsy boxes with glossy finishes or incorrect dimensions.
12. The Weight
Genuine Chanel bags are heavier than most people expect because of the quality metal hardware. A Medium Classic Flap weighs approximately 1.3 lbs. The chain strap alone contributes significant weight. If the bag feels light or the chain sounds hollow when moved, it is likely counterfeit.
